Industry Experts Supporting Our Cause

Alison Yeung, MD, CCFP,Bsc.

As a practicing Family Physician, and mom to two young kids, I have seen firsthand the way that digital technology can present both challenges and opportunities for young people.

Over the past decade I have come to know my patients, and follow them through challenges and success. I have become acutely aware of the ways in which our youth are struggling, and that many appear to be struggling in new and unprecedented ways- increasing rates of depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm and suicidal thoughts. What also stands out to me is that they seem more lost-they feel more alone, less motivated, and lack a deep sense of purpose.

As digital technology becomes more engrained into our everyday function, I’ve learned that this can pose significant drawbacks in the lives of children. As with anything, moderation is key. But the reality is that many teens and tweens are spending the majority of their time on social media and other technologies. This time spent is displacing other crucial aspects of childhood development, including time outdoors, physical activity, adequate sleep and time in-person with friends and family.

This journey has also made me aware of the lack of safeguards that exist to hold tech companies accountable for child online safety, and all the ways they are exploiting the vulnerability of our children.

I believe that if parents want to delay the introduction of smartphones and social media, doing it collectively offers the best chance for success.
